ANNUAL REFRESHER COURSE #SC-200
The Annual Refresher Course,
SC-200, is required by BSIS
for each officer to take every year after the year they get their guard card, to keep their
training requirements up to
date. There is a requirement that each officer take 8-hours per year, following the first year with 40-hours. This is an
8-hour course that covers a
wide variety of topics and covers the annual training requirement.

Continuing Education
Objective: To
provide additional or

independent training
entity or may be

Required CA State Guard Card Course -
#SC-101
This class is the first step required to getting a
guard card.
It consists of 4-Hours of required Power-to-Arrest training and 4-Hours of
required Weapons of Mass Destruction training. The is based on the CA Department of Consumer Affairs' Power to Arrest Training Manual, and CA State BSIS course syllabus.
All CA State security guards are required by the Bureau of Security
and Investigative Services (BSIS) to take this course before they can submit
their CA State Guard Card Application.
Three Steps to Getting a Guard Card: Step 1: Take this 8-hour course and receive certificate. Step 2: Get Fingerprints done by a Live Scan Operator. Step 3: Submit CA State Online Security Guard Application.
TITLE:
Power to Arrest and Weapons of
Mass Destruction
Course Overview: The Power to Arrest
and Weapons of Mass Destruction Course consists of four (4) hours of training in both of
the following two (2) subjects:
Power to Arrest - 4 hours (REQUIRED)
Objective: To
familiarize and instruct the individual on the training
topics delineated at Business and Professions Code
section 7583.7, including, without limitation, legal
aspects, techniques, liability, and company requirements
relating to the arrest of an individual. The training
will utilize the Department of Consumer Affairs' Power
to Arrest Training Manual and may include lecture,
discussion, exercises and role-playing.
Overview of Power
to Arrest Manual and subject matter.
Definition of
arrest and discussion on the implications to the
subject, the guard and the company.
Lecture/discussion
on escalation and de-escalation techniques in the
use of force.
Lecture/discussion
in the use of restraint techniques and their
implications.
Discussion of trespass
laws and implications of enforcement.
Completion of the
Power to Arrest Training Manual Test with 100% score
in accordance with the Manual's Administering
Instructions.
Weapons of Mass
Destruction & Terrorism Awareness
- 4 hours(REQUIRED)
Objective: To familiarize
and instruct the individual on the subject matter and
observation skills required to identify and report
precursor activities to a terrorist event, react
appropriately, report the occurrence of a terrorist
event, and remain safe while helping control the scene
after a terrorist event. The training will utilize the
Department of Consumer Affairs' Weapons of Mass
Destruction & Terrorism Awareness for Security
Professionals course consisting of a Digital Video Disk
(DVD), Student Workbook and Facilitator Manual.
Introduction and overview of the training.
The Role of a Security Officer.
The Nature of Terrorism.
Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD).
Coordinating and Sharing of Critical Information.

MANDATORY COURSES
(16 Hours Required)
This is the list of Mandatory courses. All guards
are required take 2 of these 4
courses (8 hours) within the first 30 days of working,
along with 8 hours of Elective
courses so that they have a
total of 16 hours of Mandatory
and Elective courses taken and
within 30 days of starting work.
They are also required to take the other 2
Mandatory
courses (8 more hours) within the first 6 months of working
(also along with another 8 hours
of Elective courses),
for a total of 16 hours of
Mandatory Training, as required
by the State of California.
Objective:
To
familiarize and instruct the individual in basic skills
and provide a common body of knowledge in the
performance of security guard work. Each courses
includes information and subject matter pertaining to the
outline provided. Additionally, all courses
include written material and exercises that assure
the students comprehend the subject matter
presented. Every newly licensed or employed security
guard shall complete two of the mandatory courses within
thirty (30) days from the day the guard's registration
card is issued (8 hours) or the day the guard begins
employment. The remaining two mandatory courses each
consisting of four (4) hours of instruction, shall be
completed within the first six (6) months from the day
the guard registration card is issued or the day the
guard begins employment as a security guard. Pursuant to
Business and Professions Code Section 7583.6 (b) the
following outline includes subjects that shall be taught
and the maximum number of hours that will be allowed for
completion of the Mandatory Courses.

courses. All guards
are required to take 8 hours
of these Elective courses within the
first 30 days of working
along with 8 hours of
Mandatory courses.
They are also required to
take 8 more hours of these
courses within the first 6
months of working (also

Mandatory courses), for a
total of 16 hours of
Elective training. There are
over 60 hours of BSIS Elective
courses in this section to
choose from.
Objective: To familiarize and instruct the
individual in basic employer requirements relating to the performance of guard
duties. Additionally, to provide the employer and the individual with the
opportunity to select additional course work to improve the skills and knowledge
of the individual. The listed courses should include a mixture of written
materials, lecture and exercises. The hours listed are the maximum number of
hours that will be accepted as part of the 16 hours of elective training
mandated by the Business and Professions Code section 7583.6. Every newly
licensed security guard shall complete a minimum of eight (8) hours of elective
courses within thirty (30) days from the day the security guard's registration
card is issued or the day the guard begins employment. An additional eight (8)
hours of elective courses shall be completed within the first six (6) months
from the day the security guard's registration card is issued or the day the
guard begins employment. Pursuant to Business and Professions Code Section
7583.6 (b), the following outline includes subjects that shall be taught and the
maximum number of hours that will be allowed for completion of the elective
courses.
