As of 2024, CA
state BSIS now requires the 5-Hour Appropriate Use of Force topic from the 8-Hour Power to Arrest (PTA) training
course to be taken in-person.
SB-652 NOTICE:
This new law went into effect on Jan 1, 2026. To comply with
SB-652, a student must apply for a guard card within 6 months of the date
that they start Part A of the 2-part course. Please see the New Legislation Alert on the BSIS website for details:

This website allows students to choose from 19 different BSIS licensed locations accross CA to take the PTA and AUOF course.
Each location provides both the 3-Hour online Part A topic, and the 5-Hour in-person Part B topic.

California Code of Regulations 643: Skills Training Course for Security Guards and PSOs lists the required license training, including some required in-person training, before applying for a guard card or PSO license.
New Guards:
As of 2024, this BSIS 8-Hour 2-Part Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force training is the course required to apply for
a CA state guard card. For detailed instructions on how to get a CA state guard card, please see this page.
The previous course, Power to Arrest and Weapson of Mass Destruction is no longer accepted by the BSIS.
All Guards 2024/2025 : The BSIS is also recommending that all current security guards
and PSOs take the Power to Arrest and Appropriate Use of Force coruse as their annual refresher
requirement. Most, if not all security guard company insurance policies rquire all guards to have the latest state
required training to be compliant with the insurance requirements.
